Protect yourself

You need to make sure that your Aussie MasterCard is protected from theft and fraud. Below are some tips on how you can protect yourself.

Card & PIN security

Your card and your Personal Identification Number (PIN) allow you to access your account electronically. So it’s important to protect the security of your card and PIN at all times.

Protecting your card

  • When you receive your card, immediately sign the strip on the back.
  • Don’t let anyone else use your card.
  • Protect your card from loss or theft.
  • When your card expires, destroy it by cutting it in half diagonally.

Protecting your PIN

  • Memorise your PIN, destroy the piece of paper it came on and do not write it on something that would commonly be found near your credit card eg. in your wallet.
  • Don’t let anyone else know your PIN – even family and friends.
  • Don’t let anyone else see your PIN when you enter it into an ATM or any other electronic terminal.
  • Don’t write or in any way indicate your PIN on your card, even if you try to disguise it.

Reducing credit card fraud

You can minimise the possibility of your card being used fraudulently by taking a few simple precautions.

Regularly check your account balance

You can easily check your balance via Aussie Credit Cards account access by phone or online. Review your monthly statement carefully and tell us immediately if there are any discrepancies.

Buying over the Internet

When using your card to make Internet purchases, deal only with reputable sites that use a high standard of encryption.

Keep an eye on your card

When paying for goods/services, particularly when overseas, try not to let your card out of sight. Make sure when you make purchases the card is given back to you, always check the amount you are signing for when making a purchase, and ensure your card isn't scanned twice.

Don’t reveal your credit card details

Never give out your credit card details to anyone, even if contacted by someone claiming to be from Aussie.

Treat your card like cash

Normal security procedures for your card and PIN as detailed in your Aussie MasterCard Conditions of Use booklet need to be applied at all times. Think of your credit card as cash - not just a piece of plastic. Report a lost or stolen card immediately.

Other tips to protect your card

Keep it away from magnetised objects (e.g., your work security access pass or other credit cards) and loose change, or it may become deactivated.

  • Store it in place where it’s not rubbing or scratching against another object - a separate compartment in your wallet is usually fine.
  • Try not to bend your card.

If you find that your card does not work, call us any time on 1300 660 841 to order a replacement.
